Paul Ponganis from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD gives a talk entitled "Emperor Penguins: Pushing the Envelope of Hypoxemia" at the Crary Lab science building in McMurdo. He works at Penguin Ranch, near McMurdo, where they strap instruments to the backs of emperor penguins in order to study their physiology while diving. The emperors are known to dive as deep as 500m and for as long as 26 minutes.
Chris, Matt, Marco, Nick and I enjoy a pre-bedtime beer at Gallagher's bar in McMurdo.
McMurdo disc golf course. Sweet!
Ripples in the permanent/annual sea ice transition region. Picture taken from the bus on the way to Willy Field. The ripples are apparently increasing in intensity, although I haven't personally noticed the change. I'll have to pay more attention.
