Read section 4.2, 4.3, 4.4 of Chapter 4. Especially, example 4.2, 4.3, 4.5, 4.7.

 

1)      Derive the Curie’s Law for the polarizability of molecules with permanent dipole moments. Hint: Assuming the electric field is along the z-axis; the Boltzmann weight for a dipole to have theta-polar angle is exp (-U/kT); U is the energy of such a dipole, T is the temperature.
