Problem set 1

Given September 7 2001

Due September 17 2001

Problem 1:

a:

What is the temperature at which  thermometers using the Fahrenheit scale and the Celsius scale give the same readings

b:

The resistance of a doped germanium crystal obeys the equation

ln R=4.697-3.917 ln T

where T is the temperature in kelvin. In a liquid Helium cryostat the resistance is measured to be 218 Ohm. What is the temperature?

Problem 2:

An aluminum disc with diameter 8cm just fits in a circular hole in a steel plate at 100oC. What is the area of the gap between them at 15oC?  The coefficient of linear expansion of aluminum is 2.87 10-5K-1 while for steel it is 1.2 10-5K-1.

Problem 3:

To glass bulbs of 300 and 200 ml, respectively, are connected by a capillary tube. The apparatus is sealed and contains air at a pressure of 1 atm and 15oC. What does the pressure become if the 200 ml bulb is kept at 15oC but the 300 ml bulb is heated to 100oC?
