Good news astroclubbers! All three summer priorities have been addressed:
1) We now have a clubroom (SUB 21L)
2) We have roof access to Hennings
3) Administration not interested in rebuilding UBC Observatory

Goal for the rest of the summer: Get a good telescope :)

New Directions

Due to the lack of activities this past year, the club will now have weekly meetings. The next meeting will be held Wednesday April 6 at 1-2pm. Meet outside Physsoc.

Summer Priorities:
1) Get clubroom for meetings and storage
2) Get rooftop/observatory access for observing nights
3) Procure dome & polar-mounted-motorized telescope
If anyone has information or resources relating to the above priorities we would love to hear from you.

Next Observing Night
Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

The first observing night of the school year will be on Friday, September 17th at 8:30pm. It will last for an hour and a half, and will focus on the moon and the constellations. Please e-mail Sen if you'd like to attend.

If it's too cloudy on the 17th, Sen will send out another e-mail by 7:30pm to cancel the event.

Observation Night
Friday, March 19th, 2010

There will be an observation night today at 7:30pm if the weather is good. Since the club no longer has use of the 12-inch Cassegrain, we will be setting up the two smaller telescopes near the clocktower.

Reminder: Kasun's Astro Talk is Today!
Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Kasun will be giving a talk entitled "Why Radio Astronomy?" today at 5pm in Room 12 of the Hebb building. He'll share what he's learned through his 8-month coop work term at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in Penticton, and will explain how a radio telescope works and what astronomers do with them. He'll also discuss the project he was working on: the Global Magneto-Ionic Survey.

No prior knowledge is required. The talk will be approximately 30 minutes.

Matt will be giving a talk today in Hebb 12 at 5:00pm. He'll be discussing black holes and systems used to model gravitational phenomena. This talk is aimed at a general audience, so no previous physics is required. Feel free to ask questions afterwards.

Astronomy Club Dome Open Tonight and Monday
Saturday October 3rd, 2009

Kasun will be opening the club dome tonight and on Monday, starting at 7:30pm. As usual, use your judgement regarding the weather. Only show up if the sky is at least half clear.

Also, Matt will be giving a talk about experimental black holes on Wednesday, October 21st at 5:00pm in Hebb 12. Send him an e-mail if you have any questions.

Informal Observing Night This Friday

From Kasun's e-mail to the mailing list:

What: Informal Observing Night (everyone is welcome)
When: Friday Oct 2nd at 8pm
Where: Meet in front of Earth and Ocean Sciences building (East side/facing main mall). For latecomers, the south side door will be open - just climb the staircase all the way to the rooftop.

The weather network says Friday is partly cloudy, but when it comes to weather you never know. If Friday (2nd) turns out to be cloudy, I'll push it to next Monday (5th). So on Friday come only if the sky is at least 60% clear. Use your own judgment.

Recap of First Meeting
September 17, 2009

Here's a recap of the club meeting on Wednesday:

1. The first observing night will be on Wednesday, September 23rd at 8pm. Meet at the side door of the EOS building (the one with the dome on top). We'll cancel if there are too many clouds, or if the weather is poor. Matt will try to send out an e-mail beforehand, but use your own judgement if you don't receive it in time.

2. The club will be having discussion groups this year, consisting of a guest speaker who will talk to us about interesting topics in physics and astronomy. Matt will try to have undergrads come in to talk about the research they are doing. If you'd like to be a guest speaker, just get in touch with Matt.

3. To raise funds, we'll be making t-shirts this year. Matt needs someone to head this up, so send him an e-mail if you're interested.

4. We still need someone to act as our SUS (Science Undergraduate Society) rep this year. Contact Sen or Matt if you're interested.
