The following files are available for downloading to your local system. If your browser displays the file instead of prompting you for the local save directory and file name, use the File/Save As option in your browser.

Please also check out Open Source Numerical Software

PC X-server Software

Cygwin, a free Linux-like environment for Windows is available. Click here for instructions on installing and using Cygwin to display X programs on your windows-based PC.

Here are some mathematica fonts and CDE fonts that you may want to download and install. After running these files, move the CDE and MATH30 directories to the appropriate directory and then use Xutil to add the directories to the font path.

Note that we no longer sell or support PC-Xwin32.

LabView

Available to UBC faculty, staff and graduate students. LabVIEW is an easy-to-learn, graphical programming language and development tool with built-in functionality for simulation, data acquisition, instrument control, measurement analysis, and data presentation. LabVIEW is widely considered an industry standard for test, measurement, automation, and control software.

The license provides software for a variety of disciplines and applications, including data acquisition and measurements, circuits, control and simulation, signal processing, embedded systems, and communications.

About the UBC License

The first year's setup and licensing fees for a campus wide license were paid by funds from the VP Research Office, the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics and Astronomy.

The software may be installed on UBC-owned computers (however, not TRIUMF computers) with the proviso that if the annual license cost is not paid for by the above Departments, the user will have to uninstall the software or pay for their share of the license cost.

Labview 2010 is now available. It is compatible with Windows-7.

Maple

Available to UBC faculty and staff. We have a site license for Maple courtesy of the Mathematics department. Linux, Solaris, and Windows systems are supported. See Tom for disks.

Voluntary Payment

The Mathematics Department requests voluntary payment for the program as follows.

Traditionally, we (the Mathematics department) have paid out the cost of the license up front, and let the rest of the campus use it free of charge because we're a swell bunch of people. This won't change even though the cost of the license is considerable ($7000/year). In the interests of academia, anybody on campus that wants a copy won't be denied a copy. However, to help defray the cost, we ask that anybody who uses it to make a voluntary contribution to help alleviate the financial burden. We suggest that

  • $100/yr for faculty and other non-poor individual users
  • $300/yr for department or lab usage

would be appropriate. Of course, if you want to give more, we won't complain. And of course, Math department members are exempt from any browbeating from us. Contributions can be arranged with our Financial Officer, Sharon Chan , 604-822-6302.

MatLab

Available to UBC faculty and staff. MATLAB is a language for technical computing that combines numeric computation, advanced graphics and visualization, and a high-level programming language. MATLAB is the natural environment for analysis, algorithm prototyping, and application development.

UBC IT has a licence agreement with Mathworks to redistribute licences on campus. Licences provided under this agreement are network licences, which means that in order for the application to run the computer or workstation must have a network connection. Under the agreement with Mathworks we do not have individual workstation licences.

Matlab R2007a supports Windows 2000, Windows XP (32 and 64 bit), Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit), Linux (32 bit and 64 bit), Mac (PPC and Intel), and Sun SPARC Solaris.

Costs & Ordering Information

The current fiscal year price for MATLAB is $300.00. MATLAB must be renewed yearly by March 31 of each year.

For more information on obtaining Matlab, please see the IT Service Centre Software Licensing webpage.

SolidWorks 3D Mechanical Design Software

Available to UBC PHAS deparment. The PHAS educational license includes the full SolidWorks® Simulation Package. To see more features, check out What's new.

See the SolidWorks site for information on this product.

About P&A License

The department has a 20-user floating license for SolidWorks Education Edition. Any member of the department can install the software on their computers (Windows XP Pro/Windows Vista Ultimate, and Business editions/Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions), and connect to the license server for a RTU token. Only 20 simultaneous users are allowed.

See Installation Notes for details.

UBC Applied Science Students Access

Solidworks is now available for UBC Applied Science students to use on their own personal computers (for educational and academic purposes). Thanks to the UBC Chair in Design Engineering, Tony Hodgson, and others in Applied Science for supporting this software licensing for undergrads in the faculty.

For full information on the license, including how to obtain ISO files from the Engphys Project Lab, and how to get info on the license server, go to:
    http://www.engphys.ubc.ca/projectlab/solidworks/

The Solidworks ISO files are located on a PC and USB flash drive in the Engineering Physics Project Lab (Hennings room 115), open most days from 9am-4pm or by appointment.

If unzipping of Dos or Windows files fails, you can retrieve the free FreeZip unarchiver from here.
