If you use any of the following programs, we would appreciate receiving some feedback as to how well they did or didn't work for you at sysadmin@phas.ubc.ca.

Windows Computers

  • For general SSH and sFTP access use PuTTY.
  • Xming is a port of the X Window System to the Microsoft Windows.
  • For transferring files securely from a Windows-based PC, we recommend FileZilla. For instructions to install, see below - Secure File Transfer from Windows Computers.

Macintosh Computers

  • Mac OS X now include SSH and SCP.
  • On Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, X11 (XFree86 X11R6.8) is available as an optional install from installation disks.
  • On Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, X11 (now X.org X11R7.2) is installed by default.

Linux and Unix Computers

  • All major distributions now include SSH and SCP.

Connecting to the PHAS VPN

Department faculty and staff can use the PHAS VPN to connect to their home directory on the PHAS fileserver.

Secure File Transfer from Windows Computers:

Here are some steps to install and use it:
  • After downloading FileZilla, double-click on it to install it. you can take all the defaults.




  • After installation, start it and select the site manager:




  • Enter the host name, port, servertype similar to what is shown. Be sure to use your own username. Logon type can be "Ask for password" as shown, or select Normal" to enter your password now and have it saved. Click "OK" to save or "Connect" to save and immediately connect.




  • The first time you connect to a new site using FileZilla, you will get a notice as shown below. Check that this is the correct fingerprint, then press the yes button..




  • Now that you are connected, you may upload or download files by right-clicking on them and selecting upload or download as appropriate. Don't forget to disconnect when you are done (File->Disconnect).
