Our research focuses on the electronic structure of complex and strong correlated systems, in both bulk and ultra-thin film forms. We primarily utilize synchrotron-based x-ray spectroscopies, including resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES, in collaboration with Andrea Damascelli's group). In conjunction with these spectroscopic techniques, our group is also heavily involved in the theoretical modelling of electronic structure (LDA, LDA+U, cluster model calculations) and many-body interactions (strongly coupled electron-phonon systems), in order to develop a microscopic description of the physical properties of complex quantum matter.

Currently, RSXS experiments are being performed at various synchrotron facilities around the world, including at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center in Taiwan. XAS measurements are currently being performed at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley, California. In addition, a concerted effort at developing RSXS and XAS endstations at the Canadian Light Source is currently underway to study multiphase systems and nanoscale ordering phenomena.

More information on our research program and some of the ongoing projects can be found in our research page. Contact information for all group members can be found in people. Our lab is located in the AMPEL Building (Room 245), and is also part of the Nanoscience Cluster and of the Quantum Materials Laboratory recently created at UBC.
